A Make-Up Artist in The Making~

I hope your week-end was wonderful! Mine was a memorable one. I was in Edmonton for the week-end and I made sure to stop off at the Dutchess Bake Shop. The shop is just as lovely in person as it is in pictures and the desserts are delicious - seriously~
I talked about this shop a couple of months ago - click HERE to get a recap.

To start off the week, I've decided to give y'all another interview. This interview has been in the works for a while now and I'm extremely happy to introduce you to a local gal who is passionate about enhancing one's beauty through make-up. Personally I wear little to no make-up at all. It's not that I don't like to wear it, it's just that I've never really learned how. And, I've always suffered with acne, (still do), so I've steered away from the make-up thang - a little lip gloss or lipstick is all "I think" I need and I'm out the door.

After I conducted this interview I started to change my way of thinking. You'll see what I'm talking about when you look at the photos posted at the end of this piece.

So, I'm giving a warm welcome to Leesha-Rae, (an aspiring Make-Up artist).

What city are you based out of?
I am based out of Calgary, Alberta, Canada

How did you get started? And how long have you been a make-up artist?
I got started when my friend was getting married and asked me to do her makeup for herself and her bridesmaids for her wedding. This was 3 and a half years ago and I was a little bit shocked when she asked me. I always played around with makeup and liked to try new things all the time on myself and never thought anything more than that. Then when my friend asked me, I was like "Are you serious??" and she told me that she always loved the way that my makeup looked and she didn't know too much about it. I was still a little bit confused though, because I was thinking to myself "But that's the way I do MY makeup." You see, I had never done anyone else's makeup before but decided to give it a shot. We did a trial and she LOVED it.
After that wedding, a bunch of my other friends got married and everyone just kept asking me to do their makeup. Finally I decided that I could make a career out of it because I loved it so much so I finally went to school and made it official. I would say that I started 3 and a half years ago but really became serious about things around 2 years ago. That's when I went to school and then started working at Holt Renfrew as a Beauty Advisor.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
I get my inspiration from everyone and everything. Anytime I hear a story of someone going for their dreams and goals, it inspires me. Those stories give you hope. They push you harder and give you the confidence to keep working hard at what you're doing to make it. That's why I joined the Blog world. To put my name out there AND to always read blogs about other artists out there trying to do the same as myself.
Also...My brother is a HUGE inspiration to me. He's a very talented man. He is a writer, has a dream to make it big in Hollywood but behind the scenes and he's done very well for himself. He's made great contacts in LA and New York and flies constantly back and forth between here and LA. Even though he has been rejected countless of times or turned away, he just keeps putting himself out there. He doesn't give up. I love him so much because he pushes me constantly.

Are you ever uninspired? If so, how do you get over the slump?
Constantly. This is a tough industry to get involved in. I was just very uninspired a few months ago. I feel like I've been going through a rough time for the past couple of months personally and when you're not feeling very good about yourself it shows up in your work. It was very frustrating because I felt so crappy about my work. I felt like every time I put makeup on someone, it would turn out so bad or I would have difficulty with the application. I was seriously doubting myself as an artist. I would constantly tell myself that I didn't know what I was doing and that I probably should just give up. So I surrounded myself with positive people who love me and believe in me. I turned to some friends of mine who are also makeup artists and listened to their stories about how they've gone through rough times and have felt the same way. Then I gave myself a little confidence boost. I went through my porfolio and really looked at my work to remind myself that I am talented. My portfolio is my savior sometimes. Although it's not very big, I still have pictures in there that I absolutely love.

Name one item you can't live without?
I can only pick ONE item?? Umm I don't know if I can only pick ONE item. I would have to say right now because of our dry Calgary climate it would be Benefit's Lipscription. Seriously the most amazing lip balm ever. And I am a lip balm fiend. I have turned so many people onto this Lipscription because I make them try mine and they can't even get over how good it works.

Have you got any special projects on the go right now?
I've been so busy working my full time job and then working freelance for makeup lines whenever I have a spare moment so I haven't really had time to put myself out there for other projects. But I am in the works to do a photo shoot with a local band in Calgary. Details still need to be discussed but it will be an awesome experience.

Any advice for newbies starting out?
Toughen up. In this industry you have to have a thick skin and learn how to take constructive criticism. It's not always easy hearing that someone doesn't like the work that you've done or that you need to add something or take away something but it's all part of the learning process. You can read interviews from some of the biggest names in the makeup industry and they always say that there is more to learn. AND always have confidence in yourself and your work. That was a big one for me. Especially once I started at Holt Renfrew and I was surrounded by other artists, I was extremely intimidated and scared to show off my talent. But now I've realized that I AM talented. And although my work doesn't always turn out right, I know that I am good at what I do and EVERYBODY makes mistakes and NOBODY is perfect. I've definitely learned that it's OK to know that you've done a good job. So...When you do a good job, make sure to compliment yourself and show it off. I don't mean be cocky but definitely be proud of your accomplishments.

I am always impressed with the "words of advice" responses that I get from my interviewees.
Leesha-Rae has definitely got me pumped to continue to have confidence in the work that I do.

Now, I'd like to showcase some photos from Leesha-Rae's portfolio. It was through these visuals that I came to the realization that I shouldn't be afraid of Make-up. Instead I should embrace it. I'll always love the natural look, but I'm beginning to think that it would be fun to get all dolled up from face to toe - cause these ladies look fa-bu-lous.

Love, love, love Leesha-Rae's work. I may just have to book a make-up session with Leesa-Rae real soon (since we live in the same city and all)

I've gotta give a shoutout to Mich from "Who is Mich" thanks for connecting me with Leesha-Rae!

Stuck In The Laneway.....But I Had Hip-Hop On My Mind

Well I've already mentioned that there's a whole heap of slushy streets in my city already. So far, I've survived driving through it without getting stuck.....until this evening.

I was making my way through my lane way, just trying to park in my parking spot and as I was about to turn in - you guessed it, I got stuck. Thank goodness it wasn't for long. As I got out of my car, I was thinking that I should open that bag of kitty litter that I just bought to give me a bit of traction. But, all I did was remove some slush around my two front tires. A song popped in my head and voila! I was free!

So what was the song you ask? Well it was nothing other than my man (I mean he should be lol), Common's "The Light"

Yep I was singing "there are times when you need someone........"

I was stuck and I seriously needed someone lol........

Anyhoo, all is good - but I just had to post this video.

Yeah I could have posted the original but I had to post this version:)
(some of y'all may have seen this before - but I think this is wicked! And when a remake is as good as this - then I don't mind watching it again)

If it wasn't for the slush, I would have thrown on a Spring dress or two over these past couple of days. Mother Nature is still giving us Calgarians a break with this warm front and I am loving it~
I don't know about you, but the sun definitely affects my mood - ever since it's been paying us a serious visit, I've had more energy. I just went through my closet, (you know to check out my current spring wardrobe situation) and I was shocked. I hardly have anything to wear for this upcoming spring!!!

Most importantly, I just realized that I hardly have any dresses, (I can't imagine how I coped last year!)

Anyhoo, I don't think that I listed this as one of my resolutions, but it's not too late, (I mean it's still January). - So, I'd like to add some vintage dresses to my wardrobe, both casual and dressy.

I came across these Vintage Etsy shops that have what I'm looking for and more.

Foo Foo Vintage

Pintuck Style Vintage Fashion

Hellcat Vintage

Jonquil

Now I know, all the excitement I've been having with the weather will end soon. I can't imagine it staying this warm for too long....

But the dresses that I've posted today got me motivated.

Have you started to think about Spring yet? Are there any "must-have's" for the season? Fill me in:)

Oh and don't forget that there is a GIVEAWAY that's going on......

Two Bits of Randomness.....

Well it's been another day of fine & fabulous weather! In fact it was a degree warmer today:) My only complaint is - with the sun melting all the snow away - my city is just a slushy mess. I almost got stuck for a minute today; I wasn't impressed, but I won't continue to complain, cause seeing and feeling the sunshine today was priceless.

I came randomly came across a video that I had to share.....

The first video is a young brothers rendition of Kings of Leon "Use Somebody"
I thought that the original had some soul...that's why I liked the song - but his version is off the hook!

Now I need some advice. It's the Blackberry verses Iphone debate.
I'm 2yrs into my cell phone contract and when spring comes along I'll have the ability to shop around for a smart phone.....

My cell phone service provider now offers the Iphone (they didn't before), so I've got time to make a decision to make.

Should I get this....

Or this.....

If y'all have either one, let me know what works for you and why~ I can be terrible with decisions and I'd love to get some help. I've got friends who swear that the Iphone's the only way to go and my Blackberry peeps would never even think of switching....

Would love to hear your thoughts....

Oh and I've gotta say that the response to this weeks giveaway on The Creative Mixx is phenomenal!!! The comments are rolling in like crazy and y'all are tweeting & facebooking! Wowsers! I'm so happy to see all the love and followers:)

If you haven't hear about the contest, then you've gotta CLICK HERE....

Blogger Spotlight

It was a gorgeous day out here in Calgary! The sun was shining as bright as can be and the temperature hi about 9C (that's about 48F)!!

What a wonderful way to end a week-end:)

Now, I meant to post about this sooner.......but I'm doing it now~

Today, I'm introducing a new feature that I'll be having on The Creative Mixx.

Now as you know I've posted many interviews; from photographers to jewelry artists and fashion designers to musicians. I'll continue to introduce you to new people each week, but I wanted to get to know the people behind the blogs that I currently (or will begin to) read.
So I'll be having a "Blogger Spotlight" on The Creative Mixx. Sometimes I may contact you, or you can send me an email if you're interested in appearing on my blog~

The first ever blogger that I plan on introducing you to Gotham Hipster (of Gotham Hipster)

It's a lovely blog that celebrates many "loves" - fashion, vintage-findings and food. I discovered Gotham Hipster through the Independent Fashion Bloggers social networking site. Updated fairly regularly, expect to see a lot of divine photos showcasing Gotham Hipster's fab "street style", her love for cupcakes and cafes, fashion magazine covers & fashion editorial.

1. How long have you been blogging?
I’ve been blogging for about a year.

2. Is "Gotham Hipster" your first attempt at blogging?
Yes. But it’s evolved quite a bit from when I first began. It’s my first official attempt at blogging, but I’ve been writing my entire life.

3. Please let my readers know what your blog is all about?
I document why I think New York is so brilliant. I celebrate all it has to offer; the delectable meals which I consume, scavenging to find that hole-in-the-wall vintage gem, and all the interesting and culturally unique people I observe on a daily basis.

4. Many bloggers start up for many reasons, tell me a bit about why you started a blog?
I wanted a format to combine my aspirations of a career in fashion journalism with my love of New York.

5. What steps have you taken to promote your blog and gain readership?
I make sure I’m up to date on all of my favorite blogs and scavenge the web to find new ones I’m not familiar with. I leave a lot of comments. If you’re leaving a comment worth reading, chances are they’ll be interested in reading your blog.

6. Name one item that you can't live without?
My red lipstick is my signature- without it I feel naked.

7. Do you have any advice for newbies starting out?
Site all of your sources

Check out Gotham Hipster by clicking HERE
(As you know I love, love, love music - so I was happy to land on Gotham Hipster's blog to hear Lily Allen's "Fear" as the first song~)

Before I head out for the night, I just want to thank everyone who has left a comment on the Blog Giveaway Post! And to my new followers - WELCOME!

If you haven't hear about the latest Contest on The Creative Mixx - then CLICK HERE for details.

You've got the chance to win 2 lovely items:

Double The Fun!!

Hey peeps! I had planned to post this earlier today but was swamped and didn't get the chance. Then I was gonna post it early tomorrow morning, but I was pretty excited to get things started.

Last night, I mentioned that I'll be having a Celebratory Giveaway on The Creative Mixx.
In celebration of reaching 100+ followers this week, (my goodness I'm at 105 - so fabulous!), I have two lovely ladies from two separate Etsy shops who have offered to help me celebrate!!!!

The theme tonight is "Remembering the art of Writing". Both of these talented ladies give us beautiful options for recording our thoughts or sending a message. I still prefer getting a handwritten card over a electronic one and I personally carry around a notebook to record my random thoughts rather than entering them onto my cell phone.

Now y'all know the deal, first I'm going to introduce you to them and give you my fave picks from their etsy shops. Then, I'll reveal what's up for grabs!

First up, I have Trish from SpringBlossomDesign who creates delightful greeting cards for each individual person and occasion.

How did you get started?
I started card making just over one year ago when I was introduced to 'Stampin Up' products by a very close friend of mine. We would have craft evenings that quickly turned into afternoons that turned into full days of card making. I have always been crafty and arty but had never really found something that I really enjoyed. Card making is fantastic because if I've only got a half an hour I can whip up something quickly or I can spend hours and hours creating. I think card making really makes the most of my talents which are colour coordination and perfectionism (although I'm not sure if perfectionism is a talent or hindrance!) The most satisfaction I get out of creating cards is knowing that one of my cards has put a smile on their face!

Where do you get your inspiration from?
My inspiration starts from my love for papers and colours. Usually when I’m creating I try to think of what situation the card would be used in and that helps the inspiration flow. I also follow a few card making blogs, so I’m constantly keeping up with new products, colours and techniques.

Tell us one thing that most people don't know about you....
Making people happy is one of the easiest things you can do and I don’t believe we do it enough; a lot of people seem to be caught up in their own busy world. If we just stopped for a few moments a day to make some one smile I think it would go a long way. So if you didn’t know I’m a people pleaser

Now it's been a while since I've selected a lovely card to give to a friend, but after viewing the SpringBlossomDesign shop, I think it's time to start that for 2010~

Next up, I'd like to introduce you to Amanda from RainbowWrangler. She's a a painter, drawer of little things, bookbinder, unnecessary stuff collector and avid music listener. Her shop carries Journals, Wallets, Drawings, Paintings, Treasure Boxes and Vintage Goodies.

How did you get started?
I got started bookbinding while I was an undergrad at The Memphis College of Art. My papermaking teacher asked if I wanted to take a fellowship summer course at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. I took a Medieval Bookbinding class and completely fell in love with bookbinding. That's how I got started with collecting fabrics and making wallets and such.I have always painted, drawn and done printmaking. It's been instilled in me since I was a kid.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
All of the vintage fabric I have been collecting over the past 10 years has been my number one inspiration for the past year or so. The paintings and drawings I am doing now would not exist without my utter infatuation with vintage fabrics and patterns. The journals and other lil things I make just kinda come out of me from experiencing and being in my surroundings.

Tell us one thing that most people don't know about you....
Hmmmm, I will tell anyone almost anything so I have no clue what to tell y'all. I may joke around about being afraid of dark rooms and being alone but in actuality, I am deathly afraid of ghosts and the unknown. I have had many a dream of being confronted with the dark side and jump out of my skin when I think about it. My boyfriend uses this to his advantage and scares the s**t out of me, alot.

Although Amanda has a wide range of items at her shop, I decided to post my fave journal picks. I'm a huge fan of journals or notebooks and these are fab!

Ok y'all, it's time to do the big reveal!

The winner of this contest will receive not one but two items!!!

You get to choose one item from her store!!!

Ooh I'm Excited!

As I mentioned at the end of yesterdays post, my spirits have been lifted:) I'm so happy to see that The Creative Mixx is literally growing readership each day!

So to celebrate I am going to have another Giveaway starting tomorrow!

You'll have to check back tomorrow afternoon for all the details. In the meantime, I'm gonna post a new music video.

Now I'm not a really huge Lil Wayne fan, but I do think that he's quite talented and I like a lot of his tracks. During my time off over the holidays, I had a lazy day where I did nothing but watch TV. Some of the shows were senseless and others were not - regardless I loved every minute of it:) I randomly fell upon a Lil Wayne documentary and I was pretty impressed.

So I thought it would be fitting to post his latest video - "On Fire" (cause that's how I'm feeling right now!)

I'm out~

Good Grief....

Yesterday I was in absolute bliss, (possibly because I had the day off), but today I'm a little frustrated and I'll tell y'all why.

It's not because I was back at work today. I happen to love the peeps that I work with, so it was nice to see everyone again. But, waking up this morning to heavy snowfall just wasn't cute......

Nonetheless, my drive into work wasn't horrific at all. My only complaint during the day was that I drank about 5 cups of coffee and had to have half of a sugary apple cinnamon muffin around 1pm (it was deli-sh by the way) just to get a sugar & caffeine rush to keep me awake lol.

My issue, was when I got home this evening. I did a post about some items that I wanted to purchase online from Forever21 (click here to get a recap). I happen to love Forever21's online site, because they change their items frequently. There's always something new on the site.

So over the holidays, I decided to place an order for some of the items that I listed in my previous post. Rather than use my credit card, I decided to use a Visa gift card that I got for Christmas. Well, when I attempted to place the order it was declined! I was uncertain why so I called the customer service line for the Visa gift card. In a nutshell, they stated that the reason the order was declined was due to the fact that I failed to register the card first. That made sense, so I purchased the items with my regular credit instead and registered the gift card.

It would take a few days before I could use the gift card again, so today I checked the balance and everything was good to go:)

So I placed the following items in my cart~

And I proceeded to check out! (I know that the card worked, cause I purchase something on Itunes a few days ago.)

Well, I was wrong cause the gift card didn't work - again:( I'm not sure what problem Forever21 has with Visa gift cards, but I'm not impressed....Blah! I've given up! I will take my Visa gift card elsewhere.....

Anyhoo, enough about that, cause I do have something to smile about.

#1. Wowsers!!!! I have officially reached 100 followers today:)
This news seriously has made me smile. I've thanked all my followers before
and I'll continue to do it again. Thank-you everyone for likin The Creative Mixx
enough to follow:) It means a lot to me~

#2. If I wasn't already in a good mood, I asked myself what could make me happier?
Well Vintage of course!!!

So ladies and gents, here's some lovely Vintage items that made me smile~

Daisy Toad's Vintage

Empress Jade Vintage

Hope this made you as happy as it did for me:)

1luv peeps
