Love This!

I was browsing Pinterest.com this evening and stumbled on this ring. I have no idea where I can find it. Trust me, I'll be on the hunt for the next little while...

City Fox: A Fashion Project

Style & Conscience is a socially conscious clothing and accessories line operated by Montreal Couture, (a non-profit organization) with a mission to implement projects that address issues related to local production of garments in Montreal (and the province of Quebec).

Back in the day, Montreal's garment district used to be a thriving neighbourhood where designers, manufacturers and warehouses created fashions for markets all across Canada & the US. Unfortunately, due to the increase in "fast fashion" (garments made cheap to last only a season), Montreal's garment industry is not quite the same anymore.

To help change things, Style & Conscience has created City Fox; a stylish set of fur boot cuffs that can be adjusted to fit any boot or can be linked together and worn over your shoulders. It was primarily designed as an experiment that asks the question, can high-fashion be produced in a affordable and sustainable way?
Well, to support the community, Style & Conscience plans to pay a "fair paying" wage to Montrealers who make these pieces. And to cut the cost of warehousing, they'll make enough to satisfy the demand.

By using Kickstarter, they're able to make only as many as necessary to fulfill their orders. If they don't get enough orders to make it worthwhile, then nobody loses. However, if there is enough of a demand, then everyone wins! (Especially since there won't be any unwanted inventory sitting on store shelves or filling up in dumpsters).

To help make this project a reality, they need to raise $5000.00 over a 30 day period. The campaign is already in full swing with only 9 days left to go! They've got 36 backers already and have raised $1589.00

If you'd like to donate to the cause with as little as $1 or as much as you'd like, all you need to do is visit their campaign page on Kickstarter by clicking HERE

Treat Your Hair This Holiday Season

This is officially the first ever product review on The Creative Mixx!

I feel honoured to have been approached by Misikko.com who asked if I'd be interested in doing a product review from their online store. I figured why not?

I checked out the site and learned that Misikko.com specializes in professional hair dryers and flat irons. The product that I'm about to review is their Top Rated HANAair professional premier hair dryer. Retailing at 334.99 (but ON SALE right now for 194.99), I could tell that the item would be "salon quality". And, I loved the look! It's super sleek.

The hair dryer that I currently own was on it's last leg, so this opportunity couldn't have come at a better time! I should also state that my last hair dryer was on the cheap, so I was curious to see if there really was a difference when you pay more for a hair tool like this.

In a matter of weeks (just over two), I received a Canada Post notice stating that my package was ready to be picked up from my local post office. The package was a lot larger than I expected, so you can't even imagine my surprise when I picked up the following.....

Loveliness aside, I was eager to try out the product!

So, I headed off to wash my tresses with Paul Mitchell's Shampoo Two and The Detangler Conditioner. 20 minutes later I applied the HANA shine shield thermal protectant and was ready to dry my hair. The HANAair has 3 heat settings, two fan speeds and a cold shot. It comes with an extremely long cord, which is amazing. You never really realize how useful a long cord can be until you have a hair dryer with one. I was no longer tied to the electrical outlet lol. I was able to multitask while drying my hair.

Here's my honest opinion, this hairdryer is powerful. My hair was completely dry in about 12 minutes! Not only was the drying time quick, but my hair was truly smooth, soft & shiny. I was amazed at the quality and it was super easy to use!

I mentioned earlier that I love the look, but it's also durable too. Although I haven't done it yet, I bet if I drop it, it will still work like a charm and last a very long time.

Take advantage of the sale going on at Misiko.com and treat your hair this holiday season. This product is definitely worth the investment.

Now if you swear by the hair dryer that you currently own and don't want to make the switch, check out their site for an assortment of Flatirons

Revisiting Reworked Designs by Amberstudios

I recently received a lovely message from Barbara Assejew of Amberstudios, (an etsy shop where you can find sustainable clothing and accessories for the "consciously hip" consumer).

Since I have a "thang" for tattoos, this is an amazing custom piece designed for a client who had a tattoo down her spine. The same tattoo was repeated on the back of the coat - love that!

It's wonderful to hear how people who I've blogged about in the past are doing!

Good news! Barbara has been doing well with her online Etsy shop:) And in addition to designing re-worked whimsical pieces from upcycled clothing, she is also involved in promoting sustainability in the fashion industry.

You can check her out at Knittreat on November 3,4,5,6 2011 for a Fall Weekend Retreat at the Beautiful Omni Bedford Springs Resort and Spa

Expect to enjoy a weekend full of classes, enjoy a fashion show, partake in a fiber swap, afternoon tea and various breakout sessions! If you're interested in registering, feel free to email pghknitandcrochet@gmail.com or call Barb directly at 412.963.7030

Swapping Continues To Grow In Calgary...

Just two weeks ago another "Take Off Your Clothes" clothing swap took place in Calgary!

Soho Bar & Grill acted again as venue host for Calgary's most recent clothing swap courtesy of The SWAP Team. Swappers came out in full force to mingle, listen to cool beats by Two Towers Entertainment and hunt for fabulous finds!

This season, I stepped away from the organizing side of things as I have now moved on to become Vice President of Operations. Now I'll be helping Chapter Directors across North America organize "Take Off Your Clothes" clothing swaps in their respective cities.

Here's an inside look on what The SWAP Team's all about:

If you're interested in starting your own chapter, feel free to give me a shout, either via The Creative Mixx or necole@theswapteam.org

Mad love goes out to our new Calgary Chapter Directors (Vanessa Erickson & Stacey Savage) for organizing another amazing event! Amy Darling kept swappers motivated throughout the day, stylist Domingo "MyDomingo" Lumanog offered valuable style tips and numerous designers, boutiques and consignment shop donated items for our designer raffle.

There are so many others who helped to make this event a memorable one. I'd like to personally thank all the volunteers who have (and continue) to support this event. We donated approximately 1900 items (that were left over at the end of the event) to Goodwill Industries of Alberta! Way to go Calgary!!!

I feel like I've won the fashion lottery after each event. This time I walked away with a whack load of items to add to my fall wardrobe and can't wait for the next on in Spring of 2012!

It's Summer and I'm inspired again.....

I've taken a "leave of absence" from writing a few times this year and I really do apologize.... This is partly because I've lost inspiration on countless of occasions, became really busy with the clothing swap that I organized in June and misplaced my camera charger.

As I enjoyed the sunshine over this past long weekend, I began to question whether or not I should continue blogging....

To help decide, I went back to the beginning and read some of my earlier entries. I was so passionate then. I could feel the energy that I had when reading posts of my fabulous finds, interviews with creative peeps or recaps of events....

When I purchased my first digital SLR camera, I was the happiest girl on earth. I took it everywhere! But when I moved a couple of months ago, I misplaced it and haven't picked my camera up in over 8 months. It's ridiculous really, camera charges can be repurchased almost everywhere.

In a nutshell, I miss my creative spirit. I miss writing and I miss interacting with Creative Mixx readers and other bloggers.

So as way to commemorate the rebirth of The Creative Mixx, I have a few fabulous finds that I want to share:

Eos shoes

Eos shoes (see more high heel shoes) 290.00 CAD

Laced Trimmed Silk Dress - (350.00 US - Popavina

Bird nest Ring

I (Thou) Ring

Seek & Peek, Telescope Spy Glass Pendant Necklace

Glad to be back!

Two Events In One Night!

It's been a long time since I've been as busy as I was last night. I can't believe that I went made it to two events on a Monday, but I did....

I started the evening off at the Nat Christie Centre for the Alberta Fashion Week Media
Reception. I was eager to attend the event to get a sneak peek of the venue. I've lived in Calgary for just over 5yrs. and had never been to this space before. So I was praying that it would be fab.....

My verdict - I really love the space!

The night was cool, I mingled with a few people, had a drink and secretly wished that I hadn't eaten dinner. The hors d'oeuvres(courtesy of Earls) looked so tasty, but I couldn't eat a bite.

I caught up with Anne Corpuz-Bacalso of Anne B. Accessories who happens to be showing on the opening night this Thursday. I initially met her at Fashion Has No Boarders this year and fell in love with her pieces.

Here's a peak at what you might expect to see from her on Thursday night

If you haven't bought your tickets yet, then click the link below:

http://www.albertafashionweek.ca/events

Oh and if you want to get a sneak peak of the venue, feel free to head down to the Nat Christie Centre tomorrow night at 6 PM.

THEN, I headed over to Cafe Koi for the Show & Tell event that I help organize. We had a full roster of artists that night and as the evening wore on the audience began to feel comfortable and started to engage in convo!

This event was such a great way to end my evening - loved discussing fascinating art and meeting the artists behind the piece.

Next and final Show & Tell event before the summer months will be on Monday June 20th

Email me at thecreativemixx@gmail.com if you would like more info.

It's A Blogger Spotlight!

Hello peeps,

Well, it's been ages since I've had a blogger spotlight on The Creative Mixx and I'm happy that it's finally making a comeback tonight. I love meeting bloggers and finding out how and why they decided to enter the world of blogging:)

I'm pretty embarrassed to say that I've had this interview prepared and waiting for what seemed like years ago. In all honesty, I was contacted back in February by Vikram who was interested in appearing on my blog! Good grief, life has mos definitely been busy for me. So, I do apologize for my tardiness and am proud to present the main blogger behind Sartorial Diary:)

How did you come up with the name of your blog?
Well, since most of the posts are related to fashion in some way or the other,I thought it to be a fitting name! Also I love any and everything clothes-related,so.

What city are you blogging from?
New Delhi,India.

How long has your blog "Sartorial Diary" been up and running?
Well I started it in june of 2010,so i'd say about 8 months.

Is blogging your full-time gig? If not, what do you do on the 9 to 5?
Haha, how I wish it was!But no, I am also studying fashion design,i'm in my second year now.

What steps have you taken to promote your blog?
Uhm for starters,I update it as often as i can.I comment on posts by other bloggers.I recently joined IFB,Chictopia,Lookbook,Hypeed and Stylepile, and am trying to spread the word through them!

Have you connected with other bloggers?
Uhh yes, actually I started my blog after getting to know about this Indian,life-style blog-Lovestruckcow(the blogger for which I have actually met at various social dos).Apart from the people who are following my blog,I also get to connect with other bloggers on websites such as IFB,Chictopia,Lookbook,Hypeed,Bloglovin and Stylepile.

Do you have a vision for where you'd like to see your blog go within the next year?
WOW.I don't really know, maybe to just keep writing witty posts and supplementing them with fab pictures! Also a few years down the line I hope to become India's answer to Tavi Gevinson or Bryan Boy,but that's getting ahead of myself. In the meantime though, I'm happy doing what I love.....writing and expressing my views on pop culture(actually becoming India's answer to Perez Hilton wouldn't be so bad either :P )

What advice do you have for other bloggers?
Today we have a lot of pretty young things who think posting pictures of themselves in cutesy outfits, qualifies them to be messiahs of fashion.Whereas in reality they have zero perspective.Without sounding bitter,I would like to tell other bloggers that let this not become a popularity contest where the prettiest girl has the most number of friends/followers.People who truly know a thing or two about fashion will 'make it',in the real world. And blogging is your first step towards it,so get cracking and write about things that you are truly passionate about.

What's your most recent fashion purchase?
A pair of camel coloured skinny pants from Zara, and a cupcake print umbrella from Forever 21.

What's your absolute fave thing to do when you have free time?
I know this'll sound cliche'd, but uhmm blogging. It's not even funny when I think about the amount of time I've been spending on the 'blogosphere' in the past couple of days. Also eating, reading, watching movies and t.v.(i'm a couch potato if there ever were one), shopping and giving styling tips to people who could do with some!

Many thanks goes out to the Sartorial Diary for appearing on The Creative Mixx! It's a really cool site y'all. To check it out, please Click HERE

I've Got So Much To Share - Part 1

Hello everyone! I apologize for my lack in posting, but I've been busy as a bee organzing and attending various events around Calgary. I've missed writing and updating y'all on the "regular" so I'm super excited to share what I've been up to. I'll be posting a series of updates over the next few days and will end my recap with a long awaited "Blogger Spotlight" that I've had prepared ages ago. For those who have followed me for a while, know that I'm the Calgary Chapter Director for The S.W.A.P. Team who organizes a clothing swap in my city called "Take Off Your Clothes" twice a year. It's become quite a popular event:)

Here's a video interview that Vanessa and I did with Mount Royal University student Laura Lushington about clothing swaps:)

Our next event is on Sunday June 12th at Soho Bar & Grill from 11:00 - 5:00pm (Admission is 8.00)

So, the Calgary team put on an amazing photo shoot to help promote the event. We've been lucky again to collaborate with some local designers/boutiques this season who supported us by donating fabulous items that will be raffled off at the Spring 2011 event. Our designer & boutique sponsors play a huge role in helping this community event to be a fashionable one. To thank them, we offer exposure through our promotional shoot and social media marketing strategies. Here's a look at some of my favourite shots.......

Location - (former location) - Cat's Eye Vintage
Photographer - Mark Derry
Hair & Make Up - Tru Elegance Salon
