Cool Finds For A Thursday

I received a phone call from my cell phone provider a few weeks ago saying that I'm due for an offer on a new handset! The special little phone call came through cause my 3yr contract is up for renewal in December. They wanna sweet talk me with a new phone, so that I'll stick around for another 3yrs.

If they butter me up with an iPhone, then I'll stick around.

I saw this iPhone accessory called The Movie Peg on a cool site called coolhunting (so fitting)

Such a simple idea yet too cute!

Now on a different tip....

Hip hop legends Public Enemy made they're way to the YYC (that's Calgary y'all) this past Tuesday for a show. I heard it was dope and am sorry that I couldn't make it.

I found these shoes surfing the net yesterday, cause I had Public Enemy on my mind:

Released in 2006 and labeled the "2007 Sneaker of the Year" – Vans designed this high top sneaker with the infamous Public Enemy in mind….

It definitely wasn’t that easy to find a spot where you could get these bad boys online…..

But, an hour later I found www.vanscollector.com – number 61! – available in 9 ½ and 10
http://www.vanscollector.com/forsale.htm

The next cool find that I've got for you is one that I've known about for a while now....

I'm thinking about adding to my current collection of tattoos. I've got 7 and I'm looking to get my 8th one soon - ummmm, my b-day is just around the corner.

The West African symbol that I'm about to show you represents the way I've lived my life for the last few years.

DWENNIMMEN otherwise known as the "ram's horns" is a symbol of humility together with strength. The ram will fight fiercely against an adversary, but it also submits humbly to slaughter, emphasizing that even the strong need to be humble.

I will post a photo when I get this new tat~

I just got news from some of my co-workers that there is a snow fall warning of 10-20 cm overnight - IS THIS FOR REAL????

Regardless of the crappy weather that we are having right now, I will head out to Monarch & Vine Vintage Spring Trunk Sale at Hotel Arts from 6 until 9.

1luv and stay warm Calgary~

An Interview With The "Oh-So-Fabulous" Tayo L.

I spend much of my day surfing the web for cool finds to share with y'all. Sometimes I find something amazing and sometimes I don't.....

A couple of months ago I stumbled on a shop that “wowed” me - for real.

The photos on this site give you “vintage styling” at it’s best. Tembis Boutique has an innovative selection of remixed vintage clothing, that takes you from the 20’s straight to the 80’s.

Catering to all the “vintage vixens”, Tayo L , (the mastermind behind Tembis Boutique) shares her love for unique styles, trends and eras to give you “one of a kind” pieces that will have people talking. Sadly enough I am not in the (773) area code – so I did not have the ability to stop by the South Loop Boutique Showroom Space to look around. But, if you want to book a personal shopping appointment (from Monday – Sunday).....
Just send an email to services@tembisboutique.com or you can simply go to the site
www.tembisboutique.com to shop with the click of a mouse.

I’ve gotta say that although I didn’t get the pleasure of meeting Tayo in person – I could tell from her answers that she’s “mad cool”. Be prepared to play “dress up” with Tembis Boutique.

What gave you the inspiration to start up Tembis Boutique? And how long have you been up and running?
Well, I have always luved vintage, thrifty, yo grandmammy, ole skool, or whateva' you may call it clothing.lolol.... I just adored the way the clothing fit and looked on a woman’s body. The dresses were always so outlandish but with a simple tailored cut and the hats & accessories were always full of glamour. I was really inspired by my love of the "fabric"- no really, it was the fabric...lolol.....

If I saw any vintage piece with a unique cut, color, or fabric, I just had to have it, no matter what the size was...
After dressing a few of my girlfriends and realizing I could give them unique individual style and make them look hot - I was HOOKED. So, I gave birth to tembisboutique in Apr. 2006

I've gotta commend you on your great sense of style - it's "off the hook". I'm just wondering, how have you developed such a talent?

Well I would definitely say I got my sense of style from my Momma - she always wore the most outlandish outfits...
My mom reminded me a of a life like Barbie’s, with interchangeable outfits - she was definitely a show stopper.

Your boutique features items from the 20's straight through to the 80's. What's your fave era for Vintage?

I actually have 2 favorite eras. The first is the 70's, because the clothing had so much movement and personality. The clothing matched the disco era perfectly, those designers were not afraid to play with shapes and colors....
Everything about the 70's seemed free and it reflected in the clothing. I also adore the 50's. The women were such "ladies" with their cocktail hats, wrist gloves, impeccable dresses, and matching accessories. I luv that the women took fashion seriously at that time....
I am actually in luv with all eras. When looking at the fashions of different eras, you can see how women have been viewed in society by the leading trends of that particular era...

I find it interesting to know that you revamp/re-work some of the pieces available on your site & at your store. Can you tell me a bit about your collaboration with Lady Barn?

I revamp some of my pieces to add a modern appeal to them but staying true to the original vintage pattern....
Lady Barn is my Godmomma who helps me with alterations. I was named after her and she has helped me tremendously...

If I were to visit your shop in Chicago, what other services (other than the ability to shop for some "fierce vintage"), do you offer?
We offer photo shoots, fashion shows, trunk shows, personal shopping outside of "fierce vintage clothing"

How frequently do you add new inventory?
I add new inventory weekly.

Do you have any events planned for Tembis Boutique in 2010?
In 2010, I will be revamping the online store tembisboutique.com and I will also be doing some traveling to search for more designer vintage pieces. I’ll also be doing fashion and trunk shows…until then items can be purchased @ stores.ebay.com/tembisboutique

Have you fallen in love with a specific vintage item lately?
Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes.....my vintage Chanel drop earrings and 1950's circle dresses, (like Lucille Ball)

I Am Just Diggin These Steve Madden Sandals.....

My friends out in eastern Canada are experiencing what I like to call a "massive heat wave". Us out in the West aren't so lucky, but it is pretty decent outside.....

I took a lovely walk throughout Kensington just enjoying the scenery and all......

It was so nice to take a moment out of my busy day to relax. I should have found myself a park bench to sit on, but instead I found my way into Peacock Boutique (140 - 10 St. NW ) for a little shopping therapy. I wanted to add a few over sized tops that I can casually wear off the shoulder and I found two.

I wish I could show you what I got, but I'm blogging at work, cause my home PC is infected. It started to act up last night (which is the last thing that I need right now - seriously). I've been contemplating purchasing a mac for the longest while and I guess it's gonna happen sooner than later...

Anyhoo, after I shopped & grabbed a bite to eat, I made my way back to the office. Usually I walk with my head up rarely ever looking down, but today I did and gasped. Yeah I gasped at the sight of my sandals.....

Why in the world haven't I noticed the sad state of my sandals before???? Good grief, I need a few new pairs for realz!

I checked out the Steve Madden site for some sandal "eye candy" and I was mos definitely satisfied~

Have a look at my faves......

Ummm....so much to choose from, I'm all confused lol.....

Before I head on out for the day I must post this video for y'all....

Now I kinda like the song OMG by Usher (feat Will.I.AM), but after hearing this acoustic rendition by Jenny Suk - I was like "OMG!!!"....

This is amazing!

Enjoy~

A Fashion Event Hits Hotel Arts This Thursday~

Happy Monday y'all!

To my Canadian readers, hope you're enjoying the May long weekend (or May two-four as I like to call it lol)

I wish I could say that I'm maxing & relaxing today while sipping on a cold one - but I'm at
work:(

The fact that it isn't all that busy, is helping me cope....

Something has got me excited today though, I'm invited to the Monarch & Vine Vintage Spring Trunk Sale!!!

Monarch & Vine Vintage is a line of designer vintage garments & accessories from a wide array of eras. Some of the pieces have been re-worked into new designs - my favourite!

I can't wait to meet Christine Vik!!! I hope to get a moment with her to chat a bit about her line~

From what I've read, I'm in for a treat! I can expect to see beaded flapper dresses, 30's bias cut gowns, 40's pin up digs, 50's tea dresses, 60's mod shifts and groovy pieces from the 70's.

If you live in Calgary - then this is a sale that you might want to check out. Not only will you be able to spruce up your Spring wardrobe, but you can engage in great convo, enjoy a cocktail, hear DJ Rice spin some wicked beats and enter to win door prizes by Quorra Apothecary

Anytime Spring rolls around I begin to think "Vintage".......

So, now that the weather has been acting "seasonal" for a couple of days, I started to go through my list of Vintage boutiques & online shops. I noticed that I hadn't posted about Vantage Point Vintage yet.......

Soooo, I figured that tonight would be fitting. It rained a little and the smell of Spring is in the air.

I discovered VPV a couple of months ago and contacted them to do a mini-feature piece, (sort of like a fabulous find blurb). A couple of years ago, a husband & wife team enjoyed the “thrill of the hunt” so much that they started up Vantage Point Vintage.

Josh & Jenny may bring differing talents & capabilities to the table but they are passionate about vintage & fashion and love creating a "totally" unique outfit that lets your personality shine through.

I thought it would be fun to find out what Jenny’s most recent vintage purchase was, so I asked her….(this answer is a bit little outdated - but I still wanted to share this with you)

“One of the highlights of being in the vintage business is having an always rotating wardrobe! I rarely wear anything more than twice. One of my most exciting recent finds was an adorable sixties owl pendant. I love it so much I haven’t let it go just yet!”

Here's a couple of wicked finds from the Vintage Point Vantage site a few weeks back....

Yay 200!!!

Well peeps, today marks my 200th post for The Creative Mixx. Wow! Time really flies.... I started this blog last summer and the one year anniversary is approaching ever so quickly.

Tonight I have a few things to be thankful for. First, I'm thanking Mother Nature for being kind to us Calgarians over the past few days. It's been absolutely gorgeous out lately with intense heat and rain showers equalling a perfect combination:)

I thank all the talented people who have made an appearance on my blog and to all my followers and regular readers? I seriously thank-you for your support~

As you all know, I've been busy planning the Take Off Your Clothes swap over the past couple of months and Saturday was event day and I've gotta say that although there were a few "hiccups" for our first ever Calgary event. I think that it was a success!!!

So, I figured that a great way to mark my 200th post is to give y'all the lowdown on the clothing swap.......

We had a great turnout with close to 190 people show up to do a little "swap shopping". People were lined up before 11:00 just waiting to get their hands on a fabulous find.

Within the first hour, we had about 80 people come through the door! So, here's some photos of the interior space before all hell broke loose lol!

Then the shoppers got down to business~

Kean Tan of Modi$club.com spinned some wicked beats for the day.....

We had some models in the house courtesy of Numa models

And we were lucky enough to have some of our designer sponsors in the house!!

Jenn Sadzak with the Jensa Collection went to fashion school in Toronto and later worked for a variety of positions, including buyer and stylist. I was lucky enough to have some of her designs donated for the event - AND she volunteered too!!!

Below we have 3 young designers who have attended the Fashion Design and Marketing Diploma program at Lethbridge College. Sarah Auston located on the left, is a recent graduate & has always had a strong sense for fashion. She donated a lovely floral braided tank and volunteered before and during the event! In the middle we have Kosuke Ito of Ko's Factory, currently a fashion student at Lethbridge College, he specializes in men’s & women’s casual street wear. We landed a sweet pair of his designer jeans for the event. And to the far right, we have Tasha McDivitt, another recent graduate at Lethbridge College fell in love with fashion from the age of 10. She donated a fabulous polk-a-dotted dress for the event.

And then, to top things off, we had a reporter with Shaw TV and the program Stir show up to do a bit of interviews. Here's me having my 5 minutes of fame lol...

I know I may be a little biased here, but I thought that the event was a success!

Many thanks go out to all my volunteers and to all of the other designer sponsors who were kind enough to donate an item to the event.

So, thank-you Bailey Mitchell, Eleven Eleven Boutique, Jessica Halabi, Di Designs, Two Penny Design, Jockey P2P Canada, & Maple Leaf Storage .

Lastly, big shoutouts go to the talented Sean P. Young (event photographer), my friend Kelly took some wicked photos as well and Aleece Germano (one of the masterminds behind the SWAP team)~
